Robert Peters papers, 1960-2005.

Literary papers that date largely from Peters' retirement from teaching in 1991 and document his recent poetry and writing, his reviews of contemporary poetry (1993-2001), and his readings and performances. Materials include drafts of poems, collected poetry manuscripts, plays, essays, reviews, and novels; correspondence with family members, friends colleagues, and editors; journals (1966-2004) containing notes, poem drafts, diary entries, and pasted-in memorabilia; and documentation of his reading and performances. Peters' travels and personal life, especially his relationship with his life-partner Paul Trachtenberg, are represented in photograph albums, slides, photoprints.

American poet, critic, scholar, and teacher, Robert Peters was born in 1924 in Eagle River, Wisconsin, and grew up on a farm. He studied British literature at the University of Wisconsin and received his doctorate in 1952; taught at several institutions before joining the faculty of the University of California, Riverside (1963-1968), and, later, transferring to the University of California, Irvine, where he retired in 1991.
